ForgottenSong Fundraiser
I received this email from a person that recently graduated from UNT, and she's asked me to spread the word about her fundraiser for an organization called ForgottenSong.
I graduated from UNT this past May, and I was hoping you could share the following information about a fundraiser I'm participating in with any of your connections, possibly during one of your meetings.
The organization is called ForgottenSong and their mission is "to identify and eradicate causes for human suffering among the disenfranchised population of war-torn societies through education, vocation and meeting physical needs." They have crafted several projects; below is information regarding the specific project/fundraiser I am helping with.
Race for Febby- Uganda Poultry Project:
I am running a half-marathon on December 15th with the goal to raise $12,000 for ForgottenSong in order to fund an entire poultry farm in Uganda. The motivation behind this project is to see orphanages and similar organizations across Uganda become self-sustainable and empowered while simultaneously improving the local economy through job creation and increased economic productivity.
To learn more about the Uganda Poultry Project, you can go to http://forgottensong.org/projects/info/uganda and http://forgottensong.org/blog/blog_post/back_to_the_basics_part_4 (the justification of the poultry project).
You can also watch this video: http://forgottensong.org/media/media_post/uganda_poultry_project I have also set up a Facebook page, hoping to spread the word: https://www.facebook.com/RaceForFebby2013
To give, donors can go to https://forgottensong.webconnex.com/raceforfebby and select me as the runner they would like to support. I'm trying to raise the money by December 1st; however, donations will be accepted after that.
Thank you for your time and please let me know if you have any questions.
All the best,
Chelsea Berry
Have a great day!~

Workshop with Dr. Michael Wesch
Hey everyone!
The ANTH department has been invited to participate in a workshop held by Michael Wesch.
Here's a little bio blurb:
The ANTH department has been invited to participate in a workshop held by Michael Wesch.
Here's a little bio blurb:
Dubbed "the explainer" by Wired magazine, Michael Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the effects of new media on society and culture. After two years studying the implications of writing on a remote indigenous culture in the rain forest of Papua New Guinea, he has turned his attention to the effects of social media and digital technology on global society. His videos on culture, technology, education, and information have been viewed by millions, translated in over 15 languages, and are frequently featured at international film festivals and major academic conferences worldwide. Wesch has won several major awards for his work, including a Wired Magazine Rave Award, the John Culkin Award for Outstanding Praxis in Media Ecology, and he was recently named an Emerging Explorer by National Geographic. He has also won several teaching awards, including the 2008 CASE/Carnegie U.S. Professor of the Year for Doctoral and Research Universities.
You might know him from this video!
The workshop is called "8x10 with Dr. Michael Wesch: Framing Big Ideas for Teaching". The goal is to allow many different voices in an academic area share their best ideas about teaching and learning, and how the education experience at UNT can be improved.
It's happening Monday, September 23rd, 9:30am-11:00am, and you'll be treated to lunch afterwards.
Let Lisa Henry (Lisa.Henry@UNT.EDU) know ASAP if you're interested, because there are ONLY EIGHT (8) SPOTS OPEN.
I hope some students take advantage of meeting this awesome guy!

Spring 2013 has been better than expected! We have gained some new members, earned about $200 from fundraisers, and overall grew closer as an organization, and as friends. :)

We all want to wish Laura well in her future endeavors working with Teach For America, and congratulate her for graduating from UNT this May! The Big Event // April 6th
ASA made an appearance at UNT's "The Big Event", a service-based event during which various groups and organizations help out in the community and around UNT.
They had a relatively small group, but they helped out in more than a few ways! ASA was stationed in The Union filling boxes with envelopes, doing manual labor, wrapping and transporting supplies, organizing and cleaning, and loading trucks with canned goods.
A lot of great work by some awesome people! Way to represent ASA, you guys. :)
Remember, ASA is hosting a Garage Sale this Saturday, and a Bake Sale next Monday in Chilton Hall from 10am-2pm!

If you're signed up to help out, meet up at the bus stop on Highland, across the street from Willis Library at 4:40pm. If you're driving yourself, just meet everyone at the soccer fields!
There is no definite plan for going out afterwards, but there's definitely time to go to hookah bar, coffee shop, bowling, or whatever afterwards! Come with ideas, thoughts, suggestions :)
HAVE A WONDERFULLY LAZY/EXCITING/RELAXING/FULFILLING AND SAFE SPRING BREAK!
See y'all March 20th for our next meeting! Same time, same place. ;)

Adopt-A-Block/Bowling Deets
Hey friends,
I wanted to remind everyone that ASA is NOT meeting this Wednesday.
Instead, we're going to clean our Adopt-a-block spot at 5pm!
If you're not driving, we'll all be meeting up at the bus stop that is across the street from
Willis Library on Highland Street.
Be there at or before 4:40pm, because our bus leaves at 4:45pm!
If you're driving, you can meet us by the soccer fields, close to Eagle Pt. and the Athletic Academic Center.
Cleaning our spot should take no longer than 20 minutes! :)
After cleaning, we're headed straight to University Lanes Bowling Alley, around 6pm.
Price for bowling: about $8 per person (this includes bowling + shoe rental!)
See y'all soon :)

Scholarships are amazing. So I'm dedicating a quick blog post to them. :)
In case y'all didn't get the email, PACS has an entire page of scholarships to offer (click here), and all you have to do is fill out an application and write a couple 250 word essays.
250 WORDS.
250. WORDS.
Last year, 0 Anthropology students applied for these. :(
Scholarships are EVERYWHERE. (ex: Chegg.com, Scholarships.com)
So why the hell would you use your hard earned money for classes when people are giving out money left and right?!
When all else fails, you could always google search: "anthropology scholarships"!
:)
Happy essay-writing!

On Fliering!
(taken from the Facebook file on fliering)
As events like Meet an Anthropologist and Life After College get closer, we're going to be advertising by posting fliers everywhere we can!
Here are some guidelines about where is appropriate to do your fliering.
At UNT, only post:
- in buildings on bulletin boards (that allow all fliers; some boards allow only their department to post)
- in buildings where you see other fliers
- outside where you see other fliers
Do not post:
- on windows
- in bathrooms
- on walls in classrooms
- on department only boards
Denton Community:
- Big Mike's
- The Square (if posting in building, ask permission first)
- Recycled Books
~ if you're unsure about somewhere, just ask! ~

Welcome Back Bash & Reception w/ EBB :)
As most of you know, we had our big recruiting events last week!
ASA @ Welcome Back Bash was a HUGE success. Our beautifully decorated table and super fun map game drew in a LOT of new faces, all of which I hope to see at future ASA events. :)
As you can tell from the pictures, we had a blast.
(I may or may not have added inspirational music that starts when you click the speaker...)
* Special thanks to members Addison & Madison for volunteering their time and copious amounts of energy to the Welcome Back Bash. :) *
ASA also teamed up with Engaged Beyond Borders to throw a fantastic reception Thursday night, which allowed us all to get to know each other better and showcase what our two organizations are all about!
As usual, we got a little crazy with our picture poses. :p
* Super special thanks to EBB for a wonderful night!! *
Just in case you guys missed the reception and want to know more about Engaged Beyond Borders, you can go HERE for more info.
More fun events to come! :)
