Spring 2017 Meeting Time: Fridays 5:00 PM in BLB060

We are a group of students at the University of North Texas in Denton. We focus on educating ourselves and others about the four fields of anthropology, and how they are relevant to our daily lives.
We spend our time giving back to our community (on and off campus), holding events for fellow students, and exploring new ways to have fun.

If you're at UNT, feel free to come hangout! All Anthro majors, minors, and enthusiasts are welcome. :)

Winter break and closing the fall.

Hello everyone,

This post will conclude ASA and it's exciting fall 2012 semester! With a board of new officers, 5 total, we have begun to plan for the Spring semester, and have a lot of exciting projects

To keep this post short, I want to share the Student Organization of the Month form that has been submitted for ASA. Whether or not we win is not important, just seeing all of our accomplishments listed out is enough.

Below is the submission:

This fall semester, The Anthropology Student Association has shot off like a rocket! Below is a list of our many accomplishments!

1. We have TRIPLED in membership! (35 members, and many Anthropology faculty and staff are also members)
2. We made new t-shirts with thanks for one of the members t-shirt design. (They are green, and we have our own logo approved by the union)
3. We have attended leadership conferences at UNT, like “All for North Texas, North Texas for All!”
4. We have sponsored and co-sponsored events (life after college, studying abroad, and film screenings)
5. We have been serving UNT on campus (adopt a block program, recycling at homecoming tailgating, and in the anthropology department with the digital story telling workshop) and off campus (at the Denton rehab and nursing center)
6. This November we hosted a garage sale fundraiser, in which we raised enough money to visit the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit at the Ft. Worth Seminary. 28 members attended including some parents, it was a blast!
7. ASA has worked successfully toward building relationships between graduate students, undergraduate students, and professors through volunteering together, hosting events , and just getting together outside of academic life.
8. We have a fb group in which keeps members and our followers up to date, as well as a blog! On the blog we have posted photos from all our events, and keep our followers up to date with what we are up to. Check out our blog and browse through the entries and photos to learn more about ASA and what we have been up to! http://asaunt.blogspot.com/

9.This Spring semester we will be promoting our organization and recruiting members at the back to school bash student organization event, participating in the big event, planning an educational trip to visit an Indian Reservation, hosting our “semesterly” Life After College panel, working in correspondence with anthropology professors and assisting them in hosting events, and much more! This is an exciting time for ASA, and I am very proud to be the President of such an energetic, respectful, committed group of students.

All in all, ASA is committed to educating its membership on Anthropological concepts and theories through a variety of events and excursions. We are also committed to serving our community both on and off campus!

Your ASA President,

Laura Ashley Lamb

See you all in the Spring!!!

*** We will start back up the first week of school with two very exciting recruitment events! But more on these next year!****

Our dead sea scrolls experience!

This weekend, ASA woke up bright and early in order to spend our day at Southwestern Seminary in Ft Worth, to visit the dead sea scrolls exhibit! Here are some photos from our experience in the exhibit. We were not allowed to take photos inside the actual exhibit itself. In fact the rooms which contained the original dead sea scrolls were kept to a limited number of people at a time, a certain degrees, and limited lighting. The methods of preservation were really neat to see!

How many anthropology students does it take to re-create pottery?

reporting back on a very successful garage sale!

First and foremost a big THANK YOU to all those who donated material to our yard sale!

We raised enough money to fund our trip to the visit the dead sea scrolls!!

Below are some photos from the sale! ( we had a lot of clothing left over that will be donated to the denton frirends of the family)

Planking cat. It tried out all our furniture.

The books sold at the garage sale do not reflect the ideologies of ASA :p

Here is a pic from our time together! After the clean up, we all ate pizza! which was awesome after working at tailgating.

A Good Day to Die film showing Nov 6

ASA is co-sponsoring the film screening, A Good Day to Die. (Above is the trailer to A Good Day to Die. )
In 1968 the abused, neglected and repressed American-Indian people fought back. From the depths of despair Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM), led his people into confrontation with the government and changed their lives forever. A stirring account of the forgotten Indian civil rights movement, this documentary recounts not only the struggle but also depicts the terrible repression they endured.

Tuesday, November 6 at 6 pm in Chilton 111C.

NOTE: This will replace the regularly scheduled meeting.
